Cambodian sugarcane farmers touring Wilmar Sugar’s agricultural operations in North Queensland were stunned by the size of the region’s cane crops.

GM Agriculture Ian Davies said the group of 18 visitors, from Phnom Penh Sugar Company, were keen to understand how they could improve productivity on their own farms to boost supply to their sugar mill.

Ian said the tourists were shown all aspects of Wilmar’s agricultural operations in the Herbert and Burdekin during the two-day visit, including drainage, harvesting and automatic irrigation.

“They were very interested in our ploughing and ripping machinery,” he said.

The group also visited the Lucinda Sugar Terminal.

“They were very grateful for the opportunity to learn more about our operations,” Ian said.

The group were hosted by Ian, Agricultural Productivity Manager Peter Larsen, Farms Group Manager Chris Scovazzi, with assistance from the Herbert and Burdekin Farms teams and Executive Assistant Christina Liepouris.
