Cane trains operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the crushing season.
Our locomotive fleet is constantly on the move to deliver harvested sugarcane to our mills to be crushed and to transport empty cane bins back out to cane sidings to be filled with more cane.
Our large cane railway network includes more than 460 crossings on public roads.
We take seriously our commitment to protect the health and safety of our locomotive crews and members of the public.
Each crushing season we invest substantial resources into a public awareness campaign to help educate the community about the importance of cane train safety.
The campaign asks people of all ages to ‘Use your train brain’ to ensure they stay safe around cane trains.
Using your train brain means:
- Be alert for cane trains
- Obey all signs and signals around our cane railway network
- Always give way to cane trains
The campaign covers billboards, television, radio, print and social media as well as engagement with kindergartens, schools and other community groups.
We also have a cane train safety mascot, Sam, who helps to spread our safety message at kindys, schools and community
