From its plants in Asia, Wilmar manufactures palmitic acid derived from palm oil. It is produced by splitting the fats at high pressure and temperature, and distilled. Palmitic acid and its salt (sodium palmitate) is used in producing cosmetics and industrial mould release agents. In cosmetics it can be used as an ingredient to hide blemishes or as an ingredient in shaving gels.

There is some research to show palmitic acid, when used with other ingredients, can enhance milk production in dairy cows.
