Wilmar Sugar and Renewables is boosting its profile with engineering students as part of a strategy to recruit the best and brightest graduate engineers into our business.
Training and Development Manager Scott Young said Wilmar was engaging more closely with James Cook University’s Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS), as well as attending industry events further afield.
“We’ve taken out a gold sponsorship with the EUS, which provides a range of opportunities to promote our brand and graduate opportunities to JCU engineering students,” Mr Young said.
“One of them is the opportunity to host a stall and address students at the EUS Industry Night, which took place last month. It’s one of the most important events on the calendar for us in terms of recruiting young engineers.”
Invicta Mill Manager Operations Harrison Slogrove was among six Wilmar representatives who attended the Industry Night, and said it was an ideal platform to promote Wilmar’s revamped Graduate Program, as well as the Vacation Placement Program and new Engineering Undergraduate Scholarships.
Mr Slogrove said student engagement was well up on previous years and all six staff were kept busy with enquiries throughout the night.
“We spoke mostly with fourth-year students looking for graduate positions, as well as a number of third-year students chasing vacation placement opportunities. There were also some first-year students looking to understand more about the different engineering disciplines.”
On 15 March, Group Manager Operations (Sugar) James Wallace and Scott Young travelled to Brisbane to exhibit at The Big Meet 2024 – a major careers expo for undergraduates and graduates.
Mr Wallace said the exhibition hosted more than 110 companies and engaged about 1,600 students, providing a significant platform to broaden Wilmar’s outreach.
“It was a good opportunity to promote Wilmar Sugar and Renewables to a bigger audience,” Mr Wallace said.
“We’re hoping to cultivate interest among students seeking vocational placements, as well as other graduate opportunities.”
