We've stepped up our engagement activities with engineers of the future with a tour of a Wilmar sugar mill.
Fifteen engineering students from James Cook University signed up for the tour of our Invicta Mill at Giru – the first one held as part of our partnership with JCU's Engineering Undergraduate Society.
Training and Development Manager Scott Young – who coordinated the event with support from Wilmar's Corporate Relations, Operations and Engineering teams – said the tour was a great success.
“We had students from the mechanical, chemical, civil, electrical and material science streams," he said.
"They were very engaged and asked lots of questions about the sugar manufacturing process and potential career paths with Sugar and Renewables.”
Scott said Wilmar Sugar and Renewables had been partnering with JCU's Engineering Undergraduate Society for a number of years and had built up its profile among students.
Our platinum-level partnership includes a stand at EUS's industry nights and two student engagement events per year.
“This year, we decided to beef up our engagement event with a mill tour to really get students thinking about a career in sugar."
Students were picked up by bus at the JCU campus and transported to Invicta Mill where did an induction, learnt about the sugar manufacturing process and taken on a tour of the factory.
After the tour, we hosted students to a barbecue dinner and transported them back to campus.
Special thanks to Invicta Mill Manager Operations Harrison Slogrove, Engineering Superintendent Brody Di Bella, Graduate Engineer Vlass Giannicos, Operations Engineer John Melville and Project Engineer Jesse Parisi for their support on the day.
